HALFPOP MEETS HALF BAKED

Not too long ago I was reading a magazine when I came across a tiny blurb about a new snack food. Normally I don’t go out of my way to hunt down such mentionings, but this one was different. This was about childhood wrongs made right.

In my family, the most coveted part of a bowl of popcorn is what my mom termed “grannies teeth”. Admittedly, not very appetizing, but we loved them. These were the seeds that remained at the bottom of the bowl. They are not quite popped, but not really unpopped either. They have these little cracks in them that make them just edible without breaking a tooth of your own. And for the fact that there were hardly any of them and there were LOTS of us (I come from a family with 6 children), these were a total prize if you could get to them before anybody else did.

So back to my hunt. The ad only mentioned them as a new fad, but never said where you could buy them. I immediately did some research and discovered that they were being made right in my own backyard. I still couldn’t figure out where to buy them retail, but was seriously considering buying a whole case from their site online. I worried that I would somehow hate them if I could have them by the handful. Boy was I wrong! Now, I don’t have to fight anyone for them. I can eat them to my heart’s content. And I have.

So when I started following them on Facebook, someone gave me the inside tip that I could find them at this upscale market. I beelined it over there! Surprised I didn’t get a speeding ticket. I bought 2 bags for myself (one of each flavor!) and bought another set of bags that I sent to one of my sisters, knowing that she would LOVE them. She was my main opponent when it came to getting these from the bowl. Of course, she did love them. When she came to town a couple weeks following that, we headed over to the market and stocked up. It was kind of ridiculous really. The stock boy finally interrupted us and said that we should consider buying a case, as it would be cheaper. Honestly, how depraved does he think we are?!

Still pretending that this was not some form of crack, we took our purchases and headed home. The whole way, discussing the many ways we planned to incorporate Halfpops into our daily diet. This is one of the many ways that I have put them to good use. I hope you enjoy!

Half Baked Halfpop Ice Cream Loaf

1 gallon ice cream (I used chocolate-chocolate chip)
1 jar caramel sauce
1/2 cup plus 2 T. Natural Butter and Sea Salt Halfpops, divided

Line a loaf pan with parchment paper. Set ice cream at room temperature for 10-20 minutes until soft. Scoop half of the gallon into the loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Add the caramel and spread to evenly cover the ice cream. Sprinkle in the 1/2 cup of Halfpops. Cover with the remaining 1/2 gallon of ice cream. Place in the freezer for at least 4 hours, but over night is better. Place a flat surfaced dish over the pan and invert to remove from the loaf pan. Remove the paper and slice. Serve immediately.

Note: The Halfpops get softer over time, so this is best if eaten within the first few days.

  1. You haven’t taken this dish to it’s full potential until you replace the caramel w/ true South American dulce de leche. Go to the nearest latino market in your area, grab a small pot and try it … you won’t believe the difference.

    I know I will bring this receipe home soon.

  2. Best dessert in a long, long time! Unbelievably workable mix of salty and sweet.

    (One side issue: Can’t read your ‘oozing from the center’ subtitle with the plate in the background. Might need to have a black outline for the subtitle there.)
