So I have asked my husband to help challenge me in the kitchen, just to ensure that I keep pushing the envelope and working without recipes more often than not. So this week he hit the famous Pike Place Market and brought me home a handful of fresh ingredients to work with. Keep in mind that this is all for dinner during the busy workweek, which is challenging enough already!
He brought me chorizo sausage, blackberries, fresh cooked crabs, Roma tomatoes and Chanterelle-like mushrooms. I decided to play off the sausage and go for a Jambalaya, but I used barley instead of rice. My spouse is trying to watch his carb intake and my typical experiments are not helping – LOL! Anyway, this turned out pretty good. Fortunately, I keep a stocked pantry, so I was able to add to what he provided. I used my own beef broth, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, a jalepeno pepper, cayenne pepper, white pepper, green onions, cilantro and lime. It had a little bit of kick, but I typically like things hotter, so this was very mild to me. I used some creme fraiche with a little powdered sugar to dress up the berries, which turned out to be a nice compliment to the meal. I love comfort food, especially during this time of year when it is cold and wet here in Seattle.
I also love it when things actually work out!
